Dr. Lindsay Smith, PhD

Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor

Dr. Lindsay Smith Neutzling has experience and specialized training in the assessment and treatment of adolescents and adults with trauma, attachment insecurity, mood and anxiety disorders, grief and loss, and interpersonal issues. Lindsay also provides couple's counseling and parenting support. Lindsay has additional specialized experience working with survivors of sexual violence, including campus sexual assault and sex trafficking.

Lindsay has worked in a variety of settings including inpatient psychiatric hospitals, community outpatient, non-profit organizations, and schools. She is passionate about working with clients from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and seeks to provide evidence-based psychotherapy to adolescents and adults healing from traumatic and painful experiences. Lindsay’s theoretical approach is rooted in humanistic/existential, with a focus on the here and now and the therapeutic relationship. She integrates Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) into her work, tailoring her approach to meet each client’s needs. In her work with couples, she uses an attachment framework to help couples reestablish secure attachments and increase positive communication. She also supports parents by utilizing a gentle and conscious parenting framework as well as attachment theory. She seeks to empower her clients to make positive choices and changes in their lives so they may find healing, peace, and inner strength. Lindsay is an LGBTQ+ allied mental health professional and works alongside each of her clients as an advocate by providing an affirming space to explore issues of gender and sexual identity.

Lindsay completed her undergraduate coursework at Washington & Jefferson College, with a major in psychology and double minors in communications and gender and women’s studies. She earned her master’s degree in clinical psychology at Loyola University Maryland and her doctoral degree in counseling at The George Washington University.

In addition to her clinical work, Lindsay is also a counselor educator and faculty member in the psychology department at Loyola University Maryland, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate psychology and counseling courses. She has published articles and presented at conferences on issues relating to traumatic stress symptomatology, attachment insecurity, campus sexual assault, and intimate partner violence.
